Formlabs is seeking an Optical Engineering Intern for Summer 2026 to support the optics team in developing and validating optical systems for 3D printing. This role requires hands-on experience with optical systems and programming skills in Python.
You have a fundamental understanding of optics and hands-on experience working with lasers, LEDs, illumination sources, optical sensors, cameras, actuators, electromechanical systems, and other optical systems. You have experience in building and testing optical, mechanical, or electrical setups, and possess programming and scientific computing experience, ideally in Python. You are excited about tackling open-ended problems across engineering disciplines and have effective communication skills, including technical writing. You can autonomously research, report results, and make recommendations for next steps. Familiarity with CAD software is also part of your skill set.
As an Optical Systems Engineering Intern, you will provide support during the optical system architecture development, component and system testing, validation, and integration. You will design and build experimental test setups, including automation of data acquisition. Conducting hands-on experiments on 3D printers and in the optics lab to collect and analyze data will be a key part of your responsibilities. You will document and present results to the greater engineering team and make recommendations for next steps in system design.
This internship is a full-time position for Summer 2026, located onsite in Somerville, MA. You will be part of a team that is dedicated to reinventing the 3D printing industry. The pay range for this role is between $2,900 and $3,300 USD bi-weekly, depending on your skills, qualifications, experience, and expected impact on the organization. While this position does not offer housing or relocation assistance, it provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in optical engineering and contribute to groundbreaking technology.
