Airbnb is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to architect and implement complex features for their Reservations and Additional Products team. You'll work with Java and Kotlin to enhance core reservation data systems. This role requires 5+ years of backend development experience.
You have 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, building production systems at scale — you've taken ownership of services from design through deployment and have navigated the complexities of debugging distributed systems. Your expertise in Java and Kotlin is deep — you've successfully shipped high-throughput APIs that manage millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture and best practices. You are proactive in growing your knowledge of leading-edge practices and trends, particularly in critical reservation and ecommerce data. Mentoring junior engineers is something you value — you enjoy fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning within your team.
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred, but equivalent experience is also valued. Experience with cloud technologies and ecommerce platforms would be a plus, as would familiarity with agile methodologies and collaborative development practices.
In this role, you will architect and implement complex features that focus on data-driven product decisions. Collaborating with other engineers and cross-functional partners across the organization, you will understand, prioritize, and execute on technical requirements. You will help define and improve coding standards, development processes, and best practices, ensuring that the team adheres to high-quality standards. Your day-to-day will involve working closely with product managers and designers to translate user needs into technical specifications, and you will be responsible for the performance and reliability of the systems you build. You will also engage in code reviews and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, helping them grow in their roles.
Airbnb offers a competitive salary range of $191,000—$223,000 USD, along with potential bonuses, equity, and benefits. You will have the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment that values innovation and creativity. The company culture encourages you to take initiative and contribute to meaningful projects that impact millions of users worldwide. You will also benefit from flexible work arrangements and a supportive team that prioritizes professional development and continuous learning.
