Waymo is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to enhance simulator efficiency for autonomous driving technology. You'll work with Python and C++ to identify performance bottlenecks and improve system efficiency. This role requires extensive experience in software engineering and performance measurement.
You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, particularly in building and optimizing complex systems. Your background includes a strong understanding of performance measurement and system efficiency, allowing you to identify bottlenecks and propose effective solutions. You are proficient in Python and C++, and you have experience working with Linux environments. You thrive in collaborative settings and can effectively communicate with cross-functional teams, including infrastructure and development teams.
You have a keen analytical mindset, enabling you to assess simulator performance metrics and clarify measurement processes. Your experience includes working with simulation technologies, and you understand the intricacies of evaluating performance in both CPU and TPU contexts. You are proactive in initiating processes that enhance performance tracking and measurement.
Experience with autonomous systems or simulation technologies is a plus. Familiarity with performance optimization techniques and tools will help you excel in this role. You are open to mentoring junior engineers and sharing your knowledge to foster a culture of continuous improvement within the team.
In this role, you will lead efforts to enhance the efficiency of Waymo's simulator stack. You will analyze existing systems to identify performance bottlenecks and propose improvements that align with the team's goals. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with the SimEval team to ensure that open-loop evaluations are adequately supported by the simulator. You will also clarify the measurement of SimD versus SimQueue, ensuring that the team has the necessary metrics for improved tracking.
You will work closely with engineering teams across the organization to set the direction for simulator performance initiatives. This includes initiating processes for better measurement and tracking of simulator performance, as well as identifying areas where further investment is needed. You will be instrumental in driving the technical direction of the simulator team, ensuring that performance optimization remains a high priority.
Waymo offers a competitive salary range of $281,000—$356,000 USD, along with eligibility for an annual bonus program and equity incentive plan.
