Overview

Google is seeking a Data Center Technician to diagnose and troubleshoot operating systems and hardware. You'll work with Linux and Unix systems in Melbourne. This role requires physical stamina and the ability to work non-standard hours.

Job Description

Who you are

You have experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols. You are physically capable of lifting and moving equipment weighing up to 50lb (23kg) and can exert yourself physically over extended periods, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling, and lifting. You are willing to work non-standard hours, including weekends, night shifts, and holidays as required. As an Australian citizen, you are prepared to obtain and maintain an AGSVA TSNV1 security clearance under the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework.

You hold a Bachelor's degree or have equivalent practical experience. You have at least 2 years of experience in diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols. You are familiar with performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on IT equipment or in a similar role, such as Systems Administration or Help Desk Technician. You have experience working with Linux distributions like Red Hat, Ubuntu, or Debian, or Unix systems such as Solaris or AIX.

Desirable

You have a certification from the Linux Professional Institute, which demonstrates your expertise in Linux systems. You are comfortable with local travel up to 50% as needed and possess a valid driver's license.

What you'll do

In this role, you will be responsible for diagnosing issues with equipment or infrastructure as they arise and applying the necessary resources to resolve identified issues. You will repair, fix, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, or infrastructure based on identified issues with defined solutions. You will install and maintain switches, routers, and other networking gear, ensuring that all systems are operational and efficient. Additionally, you will configure and troubleshoot Linux OS-related issues, contributing to the overall performance and reliability of Google's data center operations.

You will work closely with other technicians and engineers to ensure that all equipment is functioning optimally and that any issues are addressed promptly. Your role will involve collaborating with team members to implement best practices in maintenance and troubleshooting, ensuring that the data center operates smoothly and efficiently. You will also be expected to document your work and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and procedures within the team.
