Quantum computingMathematical modelingComputational physics

Overview

Google is seeking a Senior Research Scientist specializing in Quantum Error Mitigation Theory to develop cutting-edge techniques for practical quantum computation. You'll leverage your expertise in Quantum Computing and Mathematical Modeling to influence the trajectory of quantum technology. This role requires a PhD and 2 years of relevant experience.

Job Description

Who you are

You hold a PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Quantum Information Science, or a related technical field, or possess equivalent experience. With at least 2 years of experience in Quantum Computing, Chemistry, Computational Physics, Mathematical Modeling, or Applied Mathematics, you have a solid foundation in the principles of quantum mechanics and computational techniques. Your background includes hands-on experience with noisy quantum systems, quantum noise modeling, and error mitigation/suppression techniques, which are critical for advancing quantum technologies. You have also engaged in experimental operations of quantum systems, providing you with a well-rounded perspective on both theoretical and practical aspects of quantum research.

You have demonstrated expertise in quantum protocols and characterization methods, showcasing your ability to contribute to or lead projects within large-scale industry or scientific collaborations. Your experience with advanced error mitigation/suppression techniques positions you as a key player in the development of innovative solutions for quantum computation challenges. You are a proactive communicator, capable of bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and experimental applications, and you thrive in collaborative environments where you can influence the direction of research and development.

Desirable

You have a track record of pioneering high-impact findings in the field of quantum computing, and you are eager to publish your research to facilitate impact on both experiments and the broader research community. Your ability to communicate complex ideas clearly across theoretical and experimental teams will be invaluable as you work to solve the bottleneck problems defining the path to noise-free quantum results.

What you'll do

In this high-impact role, you will focus on pathfinding leading-edge techniques for practical quantum computation on Google’s state-of-the-art processors. Leveraging your strong theoretical foundation, you will develop methods that accelerate performance on current noisy processors and pave the way toward future error-corrected systems. As a senior member of the team, you will lead the way in the theory, numerical modeling, and optimization of existing approaches while playing a key role in complex and flagship quantum experiments. Your work will not only evolve the state-of-the-art but will directly influence the trajectory of the field and the realization of large-scale quantum computation at Google.

You will collaborate across several Google teams to ensure that your theoretical insights translate into real-world applications, working closely with experimentalists to address the challenges that define the path to achieving noise-free results. Your contributions will be critical in shaping the future of quantum technology, and you will have the opportunity to pioneer and publish high-impact findings that will resonate throughout the research community.

What we offer

At Google, you will be part of a dynamic and innovative team that is at the forefront of quantum research. We provide a collaborative environment where your ideas can flourish, and you will have access to cutting-edge resources and technologies. You will have the opportunity to work on projects that have the potential to revolutionize the field of quantum computing, and your contributions will be recognized and valued. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we believe diverse teams build better products.
