Overview

SpaceX is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for their Starlink Production Design team. You'll design custom tooling and machinery for satellite production, utilizing your mechanical engineering expertise. This role requires strong project ownership and problem-solving skills.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, particularly in high-volume production environments. Your expertise includes designing structures, mechanisms, and automation equipment that enable efficient manufacturing processes. You demonstrate extreme ownership of projects, guiding them from initial concept through to fabrication and production. You thrive in fast-paced settings, balancing multiple projects of varying complexity while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Your background includes proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks, allowing you to create detailed engineering drawings and specifications. You possess strong analytical skills, enabling you to solve complex engineering challenges effectively. You are comfortable working with both manual and automated production processes, and you understand the importance of optimizing designs for manufacturability and cost efficiency.

Desirable

Experience in the aerospace or satellite industry is a plus, as is familiarity with high-performance space hardware. You have a track record of successfully implementing innovative solutions that enhance production capabilities. Your ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-engineering stakeholders is an asset, as is your commitment to continuous improvement and learning.

What you'll do

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at SpaceX, you will play a crucial role in designing the factory of the future for the Starlink project. You will be responsible for developing custom tooling and machinery that facilitate the mass production of satellites and ground stations. Your work will directly impact the pace of execution and the overall success of the Starlink initiative.

You will partner closely with flight design and production teams to ensure that the satellite designs align with manufacturing capabilities. This collaboration will involve iterative design reviews and adjustments based on feedback from production trials. You will also be tasked with analyzing production processes to identify areas for improvement and implementing solutions that enhance efficiency and reduce costs.

Your role will require you to manage high-impact projects, driving them from concept to completion within tight timelines. You will be expected to demonstrate leadership and initiative, taking ownership of your projects and ensuring that they meet both technical and operational requirements. You will also engage in problem-solving activities, tackling open-ended challenges that arise during the design and production phases.

What we offer

At SpaceX, you will be part of a mission-driven team dedicated to advancing human space exploration. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, along with opportunities for professional growth and development. You will work in a collaborative environment that values innovation and encourages you to push the boundaries of engineering.

Join us in our quest to make life multi-planetary. Your contributions will help shape the future of space technology and enable humanity to explore beyond Earth. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement — your passion and commitment to engineering excellence are what matter most.
