Waymo is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for their Quantitative Evaluation team to develop signals that measure the performance of the Waymo driver. You'll work with techniques including statistics, algorithms, and machine learning. This role requires experience in data-driven decision making.
You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering with a strong focus on quantitative evaluation and data analysis — you've developed and implemented algorithms that improve system performance and reliability. Your background includes a solid understanding of statistics and machine learning, allowing you to extract insights from complex datasets and drive decision-making processes. You are proficient in Python and have experience with data mining techniques, enabling you to analyze real-world driving logs effectively. You are passionate about autonomous vehicles and understand the importance of using data to enhance driving safety and performance.
Experience in the autonomous driving industry or related fields is a plus — you understand the unique challenges and opportunities in this space. Familiarity with simulation tools and techniques will help you leverage creative approaches to evaluate driving performance. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working closely with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals.
In this role, you will develop signals to measure the performance and driving qualities of the Waymo driver, utilizing a range of techniques including statistics, math, physics, algorithms, and machine learning. You will creatively use simulation and mine real-world driving logs to assess driving performance, ensuring that the Waymo driver meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency. You will collaborate with the Planner Evaluation team to identify key metrics and develop methods for evaluating changes to the onboard software stack. Your work will directly contribute to improving the quality of the software that drives the car, making a significant impact on the future of autonomous driving.
You will also engage in continuous learning and improvement, staying updated on the latest advancements in machine learning and data analysis techniques. By analyzing performance data, you will provide actionable insights that inform software development and enhance the overall driving experience. Your contributions will help shape the future of mobility and ensure that Waymo remains at the forefront of autonomous driving technology.
Waymo offers a competitive salary range of $238,000—$302,000 USD, along with eligibility for an annual bonus program and equity incentive plan.
