Wikimedia is seeking a Senior Data Scientist on a contract basis to support a research initiative focused on understanding user engagement and traffic patterns. You'll utilize Python and SQL for data analysis and visualization in a fully remote role.
You have a strong background in data science with at least 5 years of experience in analyzing complex datasets — you've worked on projects that required deep analytical skills and a solid understanding of statistical methods. Your expertise in Python and SQL allows you to manipulate and analyze data efficiently, and you are comfortable using tools like Jupyter for your analyses. You have a keen interest in understanding user behavior and engagement metrics, which drives your passion for data-driven decision-making.
You are familiar with various data visualization techniques and tools, enabling you to present your findings in a clear and impactful manner. Your experience includes working with time-series data and conducting analyses that inform strategic decisions. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals. You are proactive in seeking out new data sources and methodologies to enhance your analyses.
Experience with traffic analysis and user engagement metrics is a plus, as is familiarity with natural experiments in data science. You may have worked in research settings or with organizations focused on content quality and contributor activity, which aligns well with Wikimedia's mission. A background in web analytics or similar fields would also be beneficial.
In this role, you will support Wikimedia's research initiative by conducting descriptive analyses of human traffic patterns and referrers — your work will help the organization understand how different traffic sources relate to on-wiki engagement. You will produce cleaned and joined datasets, summary tables, and Jupyter notebooks that support your analyses. Your focus will include time-series analyses for traffic health indicators and exploring how changes in visibility affect content quality and contributor activity.
You will collaborate with internal teams to select appropriate methods and models based on data feasibility and privacy guidance. Your insights will contribute to future improvements in search visibility and content reuse partnerships, ultimately enhancing the Wikimedia experience for users and contributors alike. You will be expected to communicate your findings effectively to stakeholders and provide actionable recommendations based on your analyses.
Wikimedia offers a unique opportunity to work on impactful research that shapes the future of knowledge sharing. As a fully remote position, you will have the flexibility to manage your work environment while contributing to a mission-driven organization. You will be part of a diverse team that values collaboration and innovation, and you will have the chance to make a meaningful difference in how people access and engage with information online. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
