Overview

Microsoft is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to architect low-latency edge services and lead reliability at global scale. You'll work with technologies like Azure, HTTP/2, and DDoS protections in Sydney or Melbourne.

Job Description

Who you are

You have extensive experience in software engineering, particularly in designing and building internet-scale edge services. Your expertise includes architecting low-latency proxies and implementing robust security measures such as DDoS protections. You are skilled in working with HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 protocols, and you understand the intricacies of traffic management and caching strategies. You have a proven track record of mentoring engineers and setting technical direction within teams, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.

You are passionate about reliability and performance, championing SLOs and error budgets to ensure high availability of services. Your experience includes driving telemetry-driven engineering practices and implementing automated mitigations to enhance system resilience. You thrive in environments where you can influence technical decisions and lead projects that have a significant impact on user experience.

Desirable

Experience with global load balancing and web application firewall (WAF) capabilities is a plus. Familiarity with cloud environments, particularly Azure, will help you excel in this role. You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and can adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a focus on delivering high-quality solutions.

What you'll do

As a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft, you will architect and build high-performance edge services that operate across hundreds of global sites. Your responsibilities will include designing services that provide L4/L7 DDoS protection and implementing HTTP-level CDN capabilities. You will lead efforts to enhance reliability by championing best practices in system design and monitoring.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify dependencies and develop solutions that meet the needs of Microsoft and its customers. Your role will involve setting technical direction for projects, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring that the services you build are secure, fast, and resilient.

You will also be responsible for driving the adoption of telemetry-driven engineering practices, ensuring that systems are instrumented for metrics, traces, and logs. Your leadership will be crucial in fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the team.

What we offer

Microsoft offers a dynamic work environment where you can make a significant impact on the future of internet-scale applications. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and collaborate with some of the brightest minds in the industry. We value diversity and inclusion, and we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement. Join us in our mission to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more.
