Waymo is hiring a Backend Engineer to implement and scale their mission-critical real-time communication infrastructure. You'll work with technologies like Java and Google Cloud Platform. This position requires experience in backend services and cloud technologies.
You have a solid background in backend engineering, with experience in building and maintaining production systems that are scalable and reliable. You understand the intricacies of real-time communication and have a passion for developing innovative solutions that enhance user experiences. Your expertise in Java and familiarity with cloud technologies, particularly Google Cloud Platform, make you a strong candidate for this role. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to support various data-exchange use cases. You are also comfortable with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, which are essential for deploying and managing applications in a cloud environment.
Experience with additional Google technologies like Spanner and Borg would be a plus, as well as a background in autonomous systems or related fields. You are eager to learn and adapt to new technologies, and you enjoy tackling complex challenges that require creative problem-solving skills.
In this role, you will implement and scale Waymo’s critical real-time communication infrastructure, ensuring seamless data exchange between vehicles and cloud services. You will work on both backend services and in-vehicle software, contributing to the development of the Waymo Driver, which powers the company’s autonomous ride-hail service. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with various internal partners to understand their data-exchange needs and developing solutions that meet those requirements. You will also be involved in optimizing existing systems and exploring innovative technical solutions to address future scaling demands.
You will participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall architecture of the systems you work on, ensuring they are robust and maintainable. Your role will require you to stay updated on industry trends and best practices, allowing you to bring fresh ideas to the team. You will also have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and helping them grow in their careers.
Waymo provides a competitive salary range of $170,000—$216,000 USD, along with eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus program and an equity incentive plan.
