Airwallex is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer for their Issuing Platform to build and maintain scalable backend systems. You'll work with Java, Spring, and AWS to support a unified payments platform. This role requires extensive backend engineering experience.
You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building scalable production systems. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have a strong understanding of debugging complex distributed systems issues. Your expertise in Java and Spring is deep — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are familiar with cloud technologies, particularly AWS, and have experience with containerization tools like Docker. Your database skills are solid, especially with PostgreSQL, and you understand how to optimize queries and manage data effectively. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working with cross-functional teams to turn innovative ideas into real products. You are motivated by the mission of building a global payments platform and are eager to tackle complex challenges.
Experience with microservices architecture and familiarity with CI/CD practices would be a plus. Knowledge of additional programming languages or frameworks is also beneficial, as is any experience in the fintech space.
In this role, you will be responsible for designing and implementing backend services that are robust and scalable. You will collaborate closely with product managers and frontend engineers to ensure seamless integration of services. Your day-to-day tasks will include writing clean, maintainable code, conducting code reviews, and participating in architectural discussions. You will also be involved in performance tuning and optimization of existing services, ensuring they meet the demands of a growing user base. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and helping them grow in their careers. You will be expected to stay updated with industry trends and best practices, applying them to improve the team's processes and outputs. Your contributions will directly impact the efficiency and reliability of the Airwallex platform, making it easier for businesses to manage their financial operations globally.
