Job Description

ABOUT FILSON AND SHINOLA

In 1897 C.C. Filson began outfitting prospectors headed for the Gold Rush with tools and apparel strong enough for the toughest spots on earth. More than 100 years later, Filson remains committed to providing pioneers of all fields around the world with unfailing goods made from the highest quality materials available. Filson recognizes that it takes a world-class team to make a world-class product. As we build on the Filson legacy of American craftsmanship, we are looking for individuals who share our dedication to innovation, excellence, and superior customer service.

At Shinola, we make beautiful, enduring, handcrafted goods that are built to be lived in, worn out, and well loved.  Our thoughtful craftsmanship, timeless design and spirited stories inspire our customers to live well, with confidence & joy—in a style that is uniquely their own!  Because we are a growing and evolving company, each employee is a key stakeholder, making decisions every day that directly impact our overall vision and direction. At Shinola, you’ll have the opportunity to make a significant contribution at the start of what we believe will become an iconic American brand.

ABOUT US

As part of our shared services finance team supporting both Shinola and Filson, this role contributes to the strength and integrity of our financial operations. Each team member plays an active part in shaping the success of our brands by ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and excellence in execution.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Controller is responsible for leading all financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, period-end close activities, tax-related and audit interactions across multiple subsidiaries under the Bedrock Manufacturing platform (including Shinola and Filson).

This role directly oversees the Accounting Manager and their team, the AP/AR Manager and specialists, the Cost Accountant, and partners with an external group for Tax. The Controller will collaborate closely with the CFO and with other senior leaders across both brands to ensure accuracy, transparency, and strategic alignment of all financial operations.

We are seeking a high-integrity, high-energy leader with strong technical accounting expertise and a passion for developing teams. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, solutions-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment and challenges the status quo to drive continuous improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) and provide actionable insights to guide business decisions.
  • Manage all day-to-day accounting functions, including Accounts Payable (A/P), Accounts Receivable (A/R), Payroll, and month-end/year-end close processes.
  • Communicate financial results and performance trends to leadership teams.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Establish, monitor, and improve internal financial controls to minimize risk and ensure GAAP compliance.
  • Partner with Bedrock Manufacturing Corporation to document, enhance, and standardize processes and approval workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, tax laws, and accounting standards.

Audit, Tax & Treasury

  • Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors; oversee audit planning, execution, and completion.
  • Coordinate tax filings through external providers and ensure all compliance deliverables are met.
  • Prepare monthly collateral and loan compliance reporting to financial institutions.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support the development of annual budgets, forecasts, and financial projections in alignment with strategic goals.
  • Partner with the CFO and Director of Finance on working capital management, financial analysis, and KPI tracking.

Operational Excellence

  • Collaborate with brand leadership on inventory management, cost accounting, and operational KPIs.
  • Drive process improvements and scalability initiatives, targeting a five-day financial close.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and accountability within the finance team.

Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance professionals across multiple entities.
  • Build a culture of integrity, transparency, and professional growth.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; master’s degree or CPA strongly preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, tax planning, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated experience managing finance and accounting teams in a multi-entity or manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP systems, NetSuite preferred.
  • Experience with Shopify, 3PL, DataLake, Azure, or Power BI a plus.
  • Proven success operating in consumer products, retail, or omni-channel businesses.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to influence and partner cross-functionally.
  • Integrity, honesty, and a high ethical standard are essential.
  • Self-starter with a continuous improvement mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and drive to achieve results.
