Overview

OpenAI is seeking a Senior Thermal Engineer to design and optimize thermal solutions for data center hardware. You'll work with experts in various engineering disciplines to ensure the reliability and efficiency of mission-critical hardware. This role requires 7+ years of experience in thermal management.

Job Description

Who you are

You have over 7 years of experience in thermal management of IT hardware, from chip/package to system levels — you've collaborated with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure the reliability and efficiency of mission-critical hardware. Your strong analytical skills and hands-on testing experience allow you to tackle complex thermal challenges effectively. You thrive in fast-paced environments and are adept at working closely with experts in thermal, mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineering.

Your expertise includes designing and optimizing thermal solutions for data center hardware, including chips, power modules, and system-level cooling architectures — you understand the intricacies of thermal performance evaluation at the chip, package, and board levels. You are skilled in addressing challenges related to power density, heat dissipation, and thermal interface materials, ensuring that all solutions meet the highest standards of performance.

You are proficient in thermal modeling and simulation, enabling you to predict temperature profiles and identify thermal bottlenecks — your ability to analyze and interpret data is crucial in developing effective thermal solutions. You are a strong communicator, capable of collaborating with various stakeholders to drive projects forward and ensure alignment on thermal strategies.

Desirable

Experience with advanced AI workloads and custom design tools is a plus — familiarity with silicon and system-level solutions will enhance your contributions to the team. You are open to learning and adapting to new technologies and methodologies that can improve thermal management practices.

What you'll do

In this role, you will design and optimize thermal solutions for OpenAI's data center hardware, ensuring that all systems operate efficiently and reliably. You will evaluate thermal performance at various levels, addressing challenges related to power density and heat dissipation. Your work will involve performing thermal modeling and simulation to predict temperature profiles and identify potential thermal bottlenecks.

You will collaborate with experts across multiple engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, to support the design, analysis, and validation of thermal solutions. Your contributions will be vital in delivering production-grade silicon for OpenAI's supercomputing infrastructure, and you will play a key role in creating custom design tools and methodologies that accelerate innovation.

You will also be responsible for hands-on testing of thermal solutions, ensuring that they meet the required performance standards. Your analytical skills will be essential in interpreting test results and making data-driven decisions to optimize thermal management practices.

What we offer

At OpenAI, you will be part of a team that is at the forefront of AI technology, working on projects that have the potential to shape the future of technology. We offer a collaborative and inclusive work environment where you can grow your skills and contribute to meaningful projects. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, and your contributions will directly impact the success of our hardware solutions.

We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities, and we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement. Join us in our mission to develop advanced AI solutions that can help solve global challenges.
