The Role

The Sr. Backend Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable, high-performance backend systems that support the company’s public-facing digital properties, primarily within marketing. This role emphasizes modern JavaScript frameworks and distributed architectures, while also requiring proficiency in traditional programming languages to facilitate legacy system migrations.

What You’ll Do

• Develop and maintain server-side logic using Node.js, ensuring high performance and responsiveness.
• Integrate user-facing elements built with React and Next.js into backend services.
• Build reusable APIs, libraries, and interfaces for future scalability.
• Migrate legacy monolithic applications (PHP) to distributed, microservices-based architectures.
• Optimize applications for speed, scalability, and reliability.
• Maintain and manage cloud infrastructure (AWS).
• Implement robust security measures and data protection strategies.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues from multiple teams via email and ticketing systems.
• Participate in and lead calls with cross-functional stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring

• 6+ years of proven backend development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js, React, and Next.js.
• Experience with headless CMS platforms, especially Contentful.
• Solid understanding of SQL, NoSQL, and GraphQL databases.
• Expertise in building RESTful APIs and integrating with front-end frameworks.
• Familiarity with PHP and frameworks like Laravel, Yii2, Zend, or Symfony (secondary skill).
• Experience migrating from monolithic to distributed architectures.
• Knowledge of OWASP security principles, especially the Top 10.
• 1+ year of experience with AWS cloud services; AWS certifications preferred.
• Experience with CI/CD automation and Gitflow workflow.

• Knowledge of data privacy compliance (GDPR, PIPEDA, APA, CCPA).
• Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG).
