Backend Engineer, Core Technology

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have war stories from debugging complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Java and Spring — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You focus on the needs of users, both internal and external, ensuring that the systems you build are reliable and efficient. You are comfortable working as a generalist across varying technologies and stacks to solve problems and delight both internal and external users. You hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems, always striving for excellence in your work.

Desirable

Experience optimizing the end-to-end performance of distributed systems is a plus, as is familiarity with high assurance engineering practices. You are entrepreneurial in spirit, eager to take on challenges that push the boundaries of what is possible in backend engineering.

What you'll do

As a Backend Engineer in the Core Technology team at Stripe, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the foundational platform that supports Stripe's products and services. You will drive the reliability, availability, efficiency, and scalability of critical tier0 infrastructure systems, including Compute, Networking, DocumentDB, and Distributed Caching. Your work will directly impact the productivity of all developers at Stripe, ensuring they have a reliable, fast, and easy-to-use inner dev loop. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement solutions that enhance the performance of low-latency microservices and large-scale data pipelines. You will also build tools and frameworks to introspect and improve reliability across Stripe's systems, contributing to the overall excellence of the organization.
