Flex is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Backend to help shape the technical direction and architecture of their backend services. You'll work with Java and Spring to deliver scalable solutions. This role requires significant experience in backend engineering.
You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Java and Spring — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. Your experience includes mentoring engineers and elevating technical standards — you understand the importance of collaboration across engineering, product, and design teams to ensure the success of projects. You are passionate about creating scalable, reliable, and impactful systems that enhance user experiences and partner integrations. You thrive in a growth-stage environment and are excited about the opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven company that empowers renters with flexibility over their expenses. Experience in FinTech or similar industries is a plus — you understand the unique challenges and opportunities in this space. As a Staff Software Engineer at Flex, you will play a critical role in setting the technical direction and shaping the long-term architecture of our backend services. You will collaborate with various engineering teams, including Consumer, Partner Integrations, and Core Platform, to ensure that our systems are scalable and reliable. Your hands-on coding and delivery will be essential as you work on impactful projects that power our core business platforms. You will be responsible for mentoring engineers and elevating technical standards across the teams — your leadership will help ensure the success of projects from inception to completion. You will engage with product and design stakeholders to align technical solutions with user needs and business goals. Your contributions will directly impact the user experience and the overall mission of Flex to provide a better rent payment experience.
