You'll work with C and C++ in an Embedded Linux environment to drive innovative solutions. This role requires experience in embedded systems and a passion for sustainability.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in embedded systems, with experience in C and C++ programming languages — you've developed software for various hardware components and understand the intricacies of working with microcontrollers and RTOS environments. Your expertise in Embedded Linux allows you to navigate the complexities of system-level programming, ensuring that your solutions are efficient and reliable.

You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams that include product managers, mobile software engineers, and hardware specialists — you enjoy sharing knowledge and learning from your peers, contributing to a culture of innovation and teamwork. Your problem-solving skills are top-notch, enabling you to tackle challenges head-on and find creative solutions that drive product success.

You are passionate about sustainability and electrification, understanding the importance of reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy solutions — your commitment to these values aligns with SPAN's mission to electrify the built environment. You are motivated by the impact your work can have on the environment and are eager to contribute to meaningful projects.

You have a proven track record of owning initiatives from concept to deployment, demonstrating your ability to manage the full lifecycle of software development — you are comfortable taking the lead on projects and ensuring that they meet both technical and business requirements. Your attention to detail and dedication to quality assurance ensure that your software is robust and performs well under various conditions.

Desirable

Experience with cloud integrations and mobile applications is a plus, as you may collaborate with teams working on these aspects — familiarity with agile methodologies will help you adapt to the fast-paced environment at SPAN. A background in electrical engineering or related fields can enhance your understanding of the hardware you will be working with, making you a more effective engineer.

What you'll do

As a Staff Device Software Engineer at SPAN, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing embedded software for our innovative electrification products — you will work on everything from bootloaders for systems without an OS to applications running in an RTOS environment. Your role will involve collaborating with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration between software and hardware components, enhancing the overall functionality of our products.

You will lead initiatives that focus on building minimum viable solutions to unlock new market segments — your ability to quickly prototype and iterate on software solutions will be crucial in driving sales and expanding our product offerings. You will also participate in code reviews and provide mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the team.

Your work will directly contribute to SPAN's mission of enabling homes and vehicles powered by clean energy — you will be at the forefront of developing technologies that help reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable living. You will have the opportunity to influence product direction and make a significant impact on the company's success.

What we offer

At SPAN, we provide a comfortable and sunny office space located near BART and Caltrain public transit, making it easy for you to commute — we prioritize team building and company culture, offering monthly social events and recognition breakfasts to celebrate our employees' contributions. We also offer flexible hours and time off to ensure a healthy work-life balance, allowing you to recharge and stay motivated.

Join us in our mission to electrify the built environment and make a positive impact on climate change — we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Together, we can create a cleaner, more sustainable future.
