Waymo is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to help build systems that enhance their core ride-hailing and fleet management systems. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams and work on mission-critical commercialization tools. This role requires 5+ years of backend or infrastructure experience.
You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building production systems at scale. You understand the complexities of distributed systems and have a track record of owning services from design through deployment. Your experience includes collaborating with both technical and non-technical team members, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned on project goals.
Your expertise in C++ is complemented by a willingness to engage in professional development activities to stay current with industry trends. You thrive in environments that require cross-team collaboration, and you are comfortable working with product, UX, and engineering teams to develop systems that evolve with business needs.
You are product-minded and understand the importance of building systems that not only meet technical requirements but also enhance user experience. You have experience with operations tooling, developer productivity, or developer tools, which allows you to contribute effectively to the team’s objectives.
Experience with cloud backends and mobile applications is a plus, as is familiarity with the autonomous driving industry. You are open to learning new technologies and methodologies that can improve your work and the team's output.
In this role, you will help build and evolve one or more mission-critical commercialization tools and systems that support Waymo's ride-hailing services. You will collaborate closely with product managers, UX designers, and other engineering teams to ensure that the systems you develop are robust, scalable, and user-friendly.
You will be responsible for tackling cross-cutting problems that require collaboration across various teams, including operations, product, legal, partnerships, and policy & privacy. Your work will directly impact the future of transportation, as you contribute to the development of the Waymo Driver and its applications across different vehicle platforms.
You will engage in code reviews, system architecture discussions, and performance optimization efforts to ensure that the systems you build are efficient and reliable. You will also participate in team meetings to discuss project progress, challenges, and solutions, fostering an environment of open communication and collaboration.
