Senior Backend Engineer - Engagement

About the opportunity

We are seeking a highly accomplished and collaborative Senior Backend Engineer to join our mission-driven team. In this role, you can think of yourself as a Product Engineer, dedicated to the entire feature lifecycle, from conception to launch.

This team’s core mission is to empower new N26 users with intuitive tools and personalized support, ensuring they feel confident and valued from day one.

This role is ideal for an engineer who excels technically but also possesses strong soft skills for stakeholder engagement. You will be a vital contributor, collaborating closely with the Product Owner and UX/UI Designers to translate user needs into seamless and scalable backend systems, directly impacting the foundational experience of every new N26 customer.

This is a hybrid role based in Berlin or Barcelona.

In this role, you will:

• Collaborate closely with your Tech Lead on architecting new features and seeing them through to completion.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software in a thriving environment.
• Actively work across multiple team boundaries, regularly reviewing, understanding, and contributing modifications to codebases owned by peer engineering teams to facilitate seamless feature integration.
• Proactively engage with technical stakeholders across the organization—finding key contacts, initiating discussions, influencing priorities, and driving alignment necessary for project success.
• Operate on a pragmatic, two-week iteration cycle, maintaining a consistent and reliable rhythm to ensure steady, valuable releases.
• Have opportunities to mentor junior members in the team by relentlessly guarding code quality through pull requests and helping them when they have questions.
• Stay up to date with the latest trends in technology and you are not afraid to propose some findings during our Get Stuff Done Days.
• Work within your cross-functional team to uphold the highest technical standards right across the product.

What you need to be successful:

Background: 

• Experience in developing software using a JVM language and Spring Boot in large-scale production systems (experience with Kotlin would be a plus).
• Sound understanding of microservice architecture.
• Knowledge of both relational and non-relational databases, preferably Postgres.
• Appreciation of working in a modern cloud architecture, preferably with AWS.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills (soft skills) with the confidence to use them to manage cross-team dependencies and priorities.
• Strong technical ability to read, comprehend, and modify codebases from other teams.
