Senior Staff Backend Engineer

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with a proven track record of building production systems that scale effectively. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have navigated the complexities of debugging distributed systems. Your expertise in Java and Spring is deep — you’ve shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture and testing strategies. You thrive in collaborative environments, where you can influence and build trust with cross-functional teams, driving alignment with leadership and stakeholders. You are innovative and enjoy out-of-the-box thinking, always looking for ways to elevate the customer experience. You understand the importance of scalability, future extensibility, and reliability in system design, and you are passionate about building world-class systems.

Desirable

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure would be a plus, as well as familiarity with microservices architecture. You might also have experience in mentoring junior engineers, helping them grow their skills and confidence in backend development.

What you'll do

In this role, you will champion the design and development of Coupang's backend services, ensuring they are robust and scalable. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver complex systems that meet customer needs. Your responsibilities will include defining system architecture, optimizing database performance, and implementing best practices for code quality and testing. You will also be involved in the continuous improvement of existing services, identifying areas for enhancement and innovation. As a senior member of the engineering team, you will play a key role in driving technical discussions and decisions, influencing the direction of projects and initiatives. You will be expected to stay hands-on with coding while also taking on leadership responsibilities, guiding the team towards successful project delivery.
