Senior, Back-end Engineer(Video Platform) - Coupang Play

Who you are

You have over 5 years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have war stories from debugging complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Go, Java, or Node.js — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. Your experience includes designing and deploying large-scale distributed systems on AWS — you are familiar with services like ECS, EKS, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, and RDS. You are skilled in developing gRPC and high-performance RESTful APIs — you understand the intricacies of API design and performance optimization. You have a solid grasp of Infrastructure as Code principles and are proficient with Terraform — you can define and automate deployment pipelines effectively. You are proactive in managing cloud costs and identifying inefficiencies — you have a track record of redesigning workloads to maximize performance against cost. You lead the technical standards of your team and apply Domain-Driven Design principles and testing strategies to achieve rapid feature releases while minimizing technical debt.

Desirable

Experience with media supply chain orchestration and automation of complex tasks like transcoding scheduling and DRM license management would be a plus. Familiarity with observability practices and building feedback loops to detect performance bottlenecks in real-time is also desirable.

What you'll do

In this role, you will design and implement core microservices and event-driven workflows that separate video ingest and delivery — ensuring the platform operates smoothly even during traffic spikes. You will define Infrastructure as Code and automate deployment pipelines — implementing intelligent auto-scaling strategies to manage compute resources efficiently. You will develop backend orchestration logic for media supply chains — automating complex tasks such as transcoding scheduling, manifest manipulation, and DRM license management. You will actively manage cloud costs and identify inefficiencies — redesigning workloads to maximize performance relative to cost, such as transitioning VOD transcoding to Spot Instances. You will lead the technical standards of your team — applying Domain-Driven Design principles and testing strategies to achieve rapid feature releases while minimizing technical debt. You will implement observability across the stack — building feedback loops to detect video performance bottlenecks in real-time and improve user experience. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the best possible viewing experience for users across various devices.
