Job Description

Overview

Come shape the future of Microsoft Teams - one of the most widely used collaboration platforms in the world. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work at the core of one of our most important challenges: delivering a fast, fluid, memory-efficient experience for hundreds of millions of users.

In this role, you will focus on deep performance optimization, with a major emphasis on memory-consumption analysis and reduction. You will work with massive volumes of telemetry data, conduct rigorous investigations, build automated anomaly-detection workflows, and uncover insights that drive product and architectural decisions. You’ll explore and enable new tools and approaches to memory profiling, partnering closely with engineering teams across Microsoft for hands-on optimizations.

This work is both challenging and highly rewarding: your contributions will have direct, measurable impact on the speed, efficiency, and reliability of Microsoft Teams at global scale.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct deep technical investigations into performance and memory-related issues using telemetry, profiling tools, statistical analysis, and experimentation.
  • Research emerging approaches, methodologies, and tools for memory optimization, and drive adoption across Teams engineering.
  • Develop and refine automated systems for analyzing large telemetry datasets, detecting anomalies, and identifying optimization opportunities.
  • Build proof-of-concepts and prototypes to validate hypotheses, accelerate decision-making, and inform long-term technical direction.
  • Partner with teams across Microsoft (Teams feature teams, Edge, Windows, and more) to design and ship optimizations that improve user experience and app health.
  • Lead and participate in architecture and design discussions related to performance and memory efficiency.
  • Influence and promote a performance-first mindset and engineering rigor across the broader product organization.
  • Mentor engineers, share expertise, and contribute to building a high-excellence engineering culture.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience delivering production-quality software.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, preferably in performance and memory-related areas.
  • Ability to work with large telemetry datasets, conduct experiments, and derive actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (C++, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python).
  • Ability to lead technical discussions, influence engineering decisions, and drive cross-team initiatives.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role.

This position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.

Microsoft is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, ancestry, citizenship, color, family or medical care leave, gender identity or expression, genetic information, immigration status, marital status, medical condition, national origin, physical or mental disability, political affiliation, protected veteran or military status, race, ethnicity, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by applicable local laws, regulations and ordinances.
