Staff Backend Engineer

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building scalable production systems. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have navigated the complexities of debugging distributed systems. Your expertise in Java and REST APIs allows you to create high-performance applications that handle significant data loads. You are familiar with cloud technologies, particularly AWS, and understand how to leverage them for efficient data processing and storage. You have experience with containerization technologies like Docker, which helps you streamline development and deployment processes. Your knowledge of databases, especially PostgreSQL, enables you to design efficient data models and optimize queries for performance. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional customer value. You are driven by a mission to contribute to decarbonization and electrification efforts, aligning with SPAN's vision for a sustainable future.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead the design and implementation of backend systems that integrate SPAN's hardware and software solutions. You will work closely with mobile, web, and firmware teams to ensure seamless data flow and user experience. Your responsibilities will include developing secure and easy-to-use APIs that provide users with access to energy monitoring data and controls. You will be tasked with processing large volumes of data, ensuring it is stored efficiently and made accessible for various end users, from homeowners to utility operators. You will also participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall architecture of the system, ensuring best practices are followed. Collaboration with product managers and designers will be essential as you translate user needs into technical requirements. You will mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and helping them grow in their roles. Your work will directly impact SPAN's mission to electrify homes and vehicles, making a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.
