Sr./Staff Backend Engineer - Java/Kafka

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems challenges. Your deep expertise in Java and Apache Kafka allows you to design high-throughput APIs that handle real-time data streams effectively. You are proficient in cloud-based infrastructure, particularly AWS, and have experience scaling and maintaining databases such as PostgreSQL, Redis, DynamoDB, and ClickHouse.

You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy mentoring engineers, helping them grow while driving the scalability, performance, and reliability of backend systems. Your hands-on experience with monitoring tools like Prometheus and Grafana enables you to ensure system health and performance. You are familiar with automating infrastructure using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation, which enhances your ability to manage cloud resources efficiently.

You understand the importance of secure API development and have experience with encryption and role-based access control. Your ability to model data and optimize queries ensures that the systems you build are not only functional but also efficient and secure.

Desirable

Experience with additional programming languages or frameworks is a plus, as is familiarity with microservices architecture. You are open to learning new technologies and adapting to the evolving landscape of backend development.

What you'll do

In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services that leverage Java and AWS technologies. You will lead the architecture, deployment, and optimization of Apache Kafka to support high-throughput, real-time data processing. Your responsibilities will include collaborating across teams to ensure that the backend systems meet the needs of various stakeholders, including product management and data science teams.
