Job Description

Overview

Do you want to work on the .NET Project System Team that is building languages and tools loved by millions of developers?

The .NET Project System team is looking for a Software Engineer II to work on C# tooling in Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, and Aspire. This involves adding new features to make coding in C# to write, and leveraging Copilot to further enhance the experience.

Culturally, the team is dedicated to a growth mindset, with an eye to keeping pace with the changing needs of a diverse set of customers. The team works closely with C# and VB developer community always looking for opportunities to help them be more effective.  The team provides early and frequent previews so that the community can be active contributors to the design, development and evolution of our tools. All of this leads to the production of creative solutions which are simple yet elegant and operate with high performance.

Team members are expected to use AI to aid in their own productivity as well as share their experiences to help teammates on how to use AI to inspire others on new ways of using AI to aid in the development process.  As a developer tools team, that may include designing and building new ways to leverage AI as product features.

Microsoft’s Developer Division (“DevDiv”) is chartered with empowering every developer and every development team on the planet to build great software faster. The .NET team within DevDiv does that by building the .NET development platform for building apps of any type, for any OS. Millions of developers worldwide use .NET in their job and as a .NET engineer you would help build the APIs, tools, and end-to-end experiences that make .NET loved by so many developers. 



Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

As an engineer in a team of about 8 people, you will be working together with your teammates to: 

  • Use creativity, teamwork, and accountability to master new complex technical areas that build best in class C# developer productivity features
  • Design, develop and test new features and bug fixes for IDEs like VS and VS Code
  • Analyze how your code and features are performing in production
  • Participate in your team’s sprint and product direction planning activities
  • Collaborate with partner teams in both open and closed source to solve challenging architectural problems
  • Use Copilot to enhance AI driven feature enhancements
  • Stay up to date on .NET platform and ecosystem developments

You’ll work both independently and collaboratively to achieve these results.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience working in one of the following: working in VS Code extensions, developer infrastructure or multi-process applications.
  • 6+ months of experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, or similar) to enhance productivity and code quality

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

 

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Detail oriented design, coding, debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and efficiently collaborate with partners to deliver outstanding results
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to tune performance for new and existing code
  • Experience in using telemetry for data driven development would be very useful
  • Familiarity with LLMs, OpenAI's tools and platforms, including ChatGPT, will be considered a valuable bonus.
  • Ability to empathize with customers and persistent drive to learn from them
  • Willingness to deep dive in technology and the ability to zoom out to frame the big picture
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent work experience

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
