Pulley is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the design and implementation of critical backend systems. You'll work with technologies like Java, Python, and AWS to build scalable infrastructure. This role requires significant experience in backend engineering.
You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, focusing on building production systems that scale effectively. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have a wealth of experience debugging complex distributed systems issues. Your deep expertise in Java and Python allows you to ship high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact features that enhance user experience. You are comfortable with cloud technologies, particularly AWS, and have experience with containerization tools like Docker. You understand the importance of data models and APIs in shaping product experiences and are eager to contribute to innovative solutions in an AI-native world.
Experience with PostgreSQL is a plus, as is familiarity with modern development practices such as CI/CD. You are also encouraged to bring any experience you have with microservices architecture or serverless computing, as these will be beneficial in your role. You are a proactive communicator, able to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, and you enjoy mentoring junior engineers to help them grow in their careers.
In this foundational role, you will lead the design and implementation of critical backend systems that power Pulley’s product experience. You will be responsible for building scalable infrastructure that supports the company’s growth and enhances the product offerings for startup founders. Your work will involve shaping data models and APIs, ensuring they are robust and efficient. You will partner closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to ship high-impact features that meet the needs of our customers. You will also be involved in code reviews and technical discussions, helping to set the standard for engineering excellence within the team. As Pulley continues to grow, you will have the opportunity to influence the technical direction of the company and contribute to the development of innovative tools that redefine equity and business management.
Pulley offers a competitive salary range of $200,000—$240,000 USD, reflecting the typical compensation for this role. We provide generous stipends for work-from-home expenses, learning, wellness, and AI tools. Additionally, we offer a 401(k) match for US employees and a pension match for our Canadian team members.
