Affirm is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and manage APIs for merchant integrations. You'll work with Java and REST API to support the product development lifecycle. This role requires 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
You have over 5 years of experience as a software engineer, with a strong focus on backend development. Your expertise includes designing and implementing APIs that are robust and scalable, ensuring they meet the needs of enterprise merchants and partners. You are comfortable collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and analytics, to drive the product development lifecycle. You understand the importance of monitoring and maintaining the availability of APIs, and you are proactive in creating metrics to support operational excellence.
You possess deep knowledge of Java and REST API design principles, having successfully shipped high-quality APIs that handle significant transaction volumes. Your experience includes working with various stakeholders to articulate technical constraints and make informed decisions that balance risks and trade-offs. You are a team player who enjoys contributing to a positive team culture, participating in growth and development activities, and mentoring junior engineers.
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is a plus, as is familiarity with agile methodologies. You may also have experience in performance optimization and troubleshooting complex distributed systems, which will be beneficial in this role.
In this role, you will be responsible for breaking down larger projects into manageable tasks and delivering them in multiple phases. You will collaborate closely with your team’s tech lead and manager to ensure timely delivery of your work. Your contributions will span the entire API lifecycle, from design and development to testing and maintenance. You will actively participate in ideation sessions with product management and design teams, helping to shape the direction of the product.
You will also support the operations of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, ensuring that the APIs remain available and performant. This includes participating in on-call efforts to address any operational issues that arise. You will engage in community-building activities within your team, contributing to a culture of growth and learning.
At Affirm, we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive work environment. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, including flexible work arrangements. You will have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that impact how consumers interact with credit, making it more honest and accessible. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement — your unique perspective could be a valuable addition to our team.
