You have 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend systems and architecture — you've successfully led projects from conception through deployment and have a deep understanding of scalable system design. Your expertise in Java is complemented by experience with cloud platforms like AWS, allowing you to build robust and efficient applications that meet user needs.

You are familiar with mobile development frameworks, particularly React Native, and understand how to integrate backend services with mobile applications — your experience enables you to collaborate effectively with frontend developers to create seamless user experiences. You have a proven track record of mentoring junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth within your team.

You thrive in a remote work environment, demonstrating excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team culture. You are passionate about leveraging technology to improve access to financial services and are motivated by the impact your work can have on users' lives.

Desirable

What you'll do

As the Principal Software Engineer at Upstart, you will be the first backend engineer embedded within the mobile team, playing a crucial role in the transformation of their mobile platform. You will architect scalable backend systems that support the expansion of Upstart's iOS app and the upcoming Android launch, ensuring high performance and reliability.

You will collaborate closely with React Native developers and product partners to define the backend architecture that will enable innovative features and enhance user engagement. Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing APIs, optimizing database interactions, and ensuring that the backend systems can handle increasing loads as the user base grows.

You will also be involved in code reviews and technical discussions, providing guidance and support to your peers while ensuring best practices are followed. Your leadership will help shape the technical direction of the mobile team, and you will have the opportunity to influence key architectural decisions that impact the overall success of Upstart's mobile initiatives.
