Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.

Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.

The Azure SQL DB Serverless & Resource Governance (RG) team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the forefront of delivering a high-quality experience for customers—whether they’re running databases that consume a fraction of a core or span an entire machine. This diversity in resource allocation translates to revenue ranging from pennies to hundreds of dollars per day.We support a wide range of SQL DB offerings, including serverless databases where resources are dynamically allocated. Our mission is to ensure the economic viability of the SQL DB business by optimizing how databases utilize cutting-edge hardware.

As a member of our team, you will:

  • Make data-driven decisions on database placement and load balancing (both intra-node and inter-node).
  • Work with:
    • The SQL engine’s advanced internals
    • A global orchestration system managing millions of databases
    • Petabytes of telemetry data to guide your decisions

You’ll help shape how SQL DB efficiently shares finite compute resources—ensuring performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness for customers around the world.

Responsibilities
  • Engage in every stage of the cloud service lifecycle—from early research and data science to prototyping, development, testing, debugging, and deployment across staging and production environments. You’ll play a key role in ensuring operational readiness and long-term service health.
  • Influence the entire stack—from the SQL engine internals to real-time telemetry pipelines and the fabric service orchestration system.
  • Wear multiple hats to demonstrate technical breadth, depth, and leadership.
  • Drive innovation in database placement and cluster load balancing, where even small changes in algorithms or policies can have immediate and significant impact on both customer experience and business economics.
  • We’re looking for engineers who are excited to design and build the next generation of intelligent, scalable, and cost-efficient systems that power Azure SQL DB at global scale.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of hands-on coding experience shipping products across multiple release cycles.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
    • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ​​Master’s degree in Systems, Computer Science.
  • Working knowledge of operating systems concepts (scheduling, caching, memory management).
  • Experience with at-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience with large-scale data analytics and app
  • Proficiency with C#/C++, solid knowledge of SQL.
  • Prior experience in Cloud service offering
  • Design and implementation skills.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
