MongoDB is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer for their Networking & Observability Team to build foundational infrastructure for their database. You'll leverage your expertise in C/C++ and observability tools like OpenTelemetry. This role requires 12+ years of experience in distributed systems.
You have a minimum of 12 years of experience in programming, debugging, and performance tuning distributed and highly concurrent C/C++ software systems — you've tackled complex challenges and optimized performance in high-stakes environments. Your strong systems fundamentals include multi-threaded programming and performance profiling, allowing you to understand and enhance the efficiency of intricate systems. You are familiar with database internals or have experience building core components for data processing systems, which gives you a solid foundation for this role. Your knowledge of the observability ecosystem and best practices enables you to implement effective monitoring solutions that enhance system reliability. Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills are part of your toolkit, and you have a strong desire to collaborate with colleagues and mentor engineers. You possess excellent time and project management skills, allowing you to make realistic assessments and meet deadlines effectively.
Experience with additional programming languages or frameworks can be a plus, as well as familiarity with cloud infrastructure and services. A background in leading technical teams or projects will also be beneficial, as you will be expected to guide and influence your peers.
In this role, you will be a deeply technical leader on a collaborative team, applying your low-level systems and networking expertise to build the foundational infrastructure of a popular database. You will work closely with the Networking & Observability Team to enhance observability and communication between MongoDB Server nodes, clients, and other services. Your contributions will have a significant impact on the performance and robustness of the database, as you will be involved in making architectural decisions that optimize the RPC stack's performance. You will also integrate OpenTelemetry to accelerate the diagnosis of performance issues and test failures, ensuring that the systems you build are not only efficient but also easy to monitor and maintain. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work alongside engineers from various backgrounds to foster a culture of inclusivity and diversity. You will mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and experience to help them grow in their careers. Your role will also involve project management, where you will be responsible for setting realistic timelines and ensuring that projects are completed on schedule.
MongoDB offers a competitive salary range for this role in the U.S., which is between $168,000 and $330,000 USD. In addition to a strong salary, you will have access to a comprehensive benefits package that includes parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, a 401(k) plan, mental health counseling, and health benefits offerings. The company promotes a strong culture of inclusivity and collaboration, making it an ideal environment for those who value teamwork and diversity. You will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and innovative environment, contributing to the development of a widely-used database system that impacts users globally. The role can be based out of the NYC office or remotely from anywhere in North America, providing flexibility in your work arrangements.
