Waymo is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and optimize systems for their autonomous driving technology. You'll work with Java, Python, and AWS to develop mission-critical tools. This role requires strong collaboration skills and experience in security.
You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building production systems that scale effectively. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have navigated the complexities of debugging distributed systems. Your expertise in Java and Python allows you to develop high-performance applications that meet stringent security requirements. You understand the importance of collaboration across teams, especially when working on cross-cutting problems that involve security, cloud backends, and product development. You are self-sufficient and product-minded, always looking for ways to improve existing systems and processes. You thrive in environments that require strong communication skills, as you will be working closely with product, security, and other engineering teams.
Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS and container orchestration tools like Kubernetes is a plus. Familiarity with security best practices in software development will help you excel in this role. You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and can adapt to changing business needs.
In this role, you will help build and evolve mission-critical commercialization tools and systems that support Waymo’s fleet management. You will collaborate with product managers, security teams, and other engineering teams to develop systems that meet business needs as they grow and evolve. Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing backend services that are secure, scalable, and efficient. You will also be involved in optimizing existing systems to enhance performance and reliability. As part of the commercialization team, you will contribute to the development of infrastructure that supports Waymo’s autonomous ride-hail service. You will engage in cross-team collaboration to ensure that the systems you build align with operational, legal, and policy requirements. Your work will directly impact the future of transportation, as you help design systems that improve access to mobility and enhance safety.
Waymo offers a competitive salary range of $204,000—$259,000 USD, along with eligibility for an annual bonus program and equity incentive plan.
