Overview

Microsoft is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Copilot CLI team to build a world-class coding agent in the terminal. You'll work with technologies like Java and Python, focusing on product quality and developer tooling. This role requires strong experience in building high-performance systems.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong focus on building reliable, production-grade developer tools. You care deeply about product quality and understand the nuances that separate promising tools from those that developers trust and adopt daily. Your experience includes working with agentic AI systems and high-performance terminal experiences, where you have designed and optimized tools that feel fast, predictable, and polished.

You possess a solid understanding of the software development lifecycle and have a proven track record of owning large surface areas end-to-end. You thrive in environments that require high autonomy and a strong product mindset, collaborating closely with product and design teams to continuously raise the quality bar for both the CLI and the underlying agent platform.

Your technical skills include proficiency in programming languages such as Java and Python, and you are familiar with version control systems like GitHub. You have experience in building, evaluating, and iterating on agentic systems, including tool design and quality optimization. You are passionate about creating delightful user experiences in terminal environments and have a keen eye for detail.

Desirable

Experience with Azure and cloud-based development is a plus, as well as familiarity with benchmarking and performance optimization techniques. You are open to learning new technologies and methodologies that can enhance your work and the team's output.

What you'll do

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Copilot CLI team, you will be responsible for building and enhancing GitHub’s coding agent in the terminal. You will work on the core agent loop that powers agentic experiences across GitHub and Microsoft, ensuring that the tools you develop are reliable and of the highest quality. Your role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams to define and implement features that improve the developer experience.

You will take ownership of significant components of the CLI, driving the development process from conception through to deployment. This includes designing and implementing new features, optimizing existing functionalities, and ensuring that the tools you create meet the needs of developers. You will also be involved in evaluating and iterating on agentic systems, focusing on quality optimization and user feedback.

Your work will have a direct impact on how developers interact with GitHub’s tools, and you will be expected to push the boundaries of what is possible in terminal-based development environments. You will partner closely with product managers and designers to ensure that the tools you build are not only functional but also delightful to use.

What we offer

At Microsoft, you will be part of a mission-driven company that empowers every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. You will work in a collaborative environment that values innovation and creativity, with opportunities for professional growth and development. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we believe diverse teams build better products.

You will have access to a range of benefits, including competitive compensation, health and wellness programs, and opportunities for continuous learning. Join us in building developer tools that materially improve how software is created and maintained, and be part of a team that is shaping the future of coding.
