Job Description

BigCommerce’s mission is to help merchants sell more at every stage of growth, from small startups, to mid-market businesses to large enterprises. We focus on being the best ecommerce platform so our customers can focus on what matters most: growing their businesses.

We are equally passionate about growing our employee’s careers and providing them an incredible experience as we rapidly expand across the globe. We are proud to have been recognized numerous times for our product and workplace culture. We empower our people and customers to build, innovate and grow, so together we can redefine the ecommerce industry.

BigCommerce is searching for a Lead Infrastructure Engineer to join the Delivery Acceleration Team. We are currently a small, distributed team that engages with the entire Engineering organization by maintaining BigCommerce’s Cloud Development Environment that enables engineers to work faster and to be less encumbered by technical burdens.

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain and improve BigCommerce’s Cloud Development Environment

  • Help engineers become more productive, removing environment concerns as an impediment

  • Manage cloud hosted VMs in Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

  • Maintain and evolve the VM provisioning process

  • Work with technologies and tooling such as GCP, Nomad, Consul, Vault, Terraform, Packer, Puppet, and CircleCI to provide an effective development environment

  • Maintain Ruby and Golang services that orchestrate infrastructure

  • Educate engineers on tool usage and process improvements

  • Respond to support requests for the development environment

  • Document technical aspects and user flows of features

  • Work and collaborate with a distributed team across the world

  • Assist in defining the team’s roadmap

  • Work closely with engineers to gather requirements

Who You Are:

  • You’re a trusted professional with at least a few years of experience building complex products. You have ideas and opinions and you’ve tested and refined them through your work.

  • You’ve completed either a comprehensive software engineering boot camp, CS, CE, SW, MIS or equivalent degree, or have relevant work experience.

  • You are passionate and knowledgeable on modern technologies and tools, without being biased toward a specific technology. You’re more interested in finding the right tools and patterns for the job.

  • You’re comfortable dealing with the unknown. You’re eager to tackle difficult problems and to explore unfamiliar tools/technologies.

  • You’re an excellent communicator. You can explain not just your ideas, but the reasons behind them, and you’re comfortable to do that in person, over Slack or email, or in a code review.

  • You have a solid understanding of modern programming and design principles. You write tested, sustainable code that you are proud of and you are committed to keeping code quality high.

  • You lead by example. You own your work, and hold yourself responsible for results. You might still be developing your leadership qualities, but you are mindful of your behavior and how it influences others.

  • You love to teach as well as to learn. You don't hesitate to ask for help and are always ready to provide help when needed because you want the whole team to grow.

  • You enjoy your work and the team you work with. You think terrible puns are funny and you would poke fun at your manager because they can’t spell.

  • You care about improving the day-to-day of your fellow engineers and keep current on modern tools and technologies.
