MongoDB is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for their Networking & Observability team to enhance distributed database communication and observability features. You'll work with technologies like MongoDB and contribute to performance improvements. This position requires 10+ years of experience in building distributed systems.
You have over 10 years of experience building distributed systems — you've successfully delivered and deployed products while collaborating with cross-team stakeholders. Your expertise includes writing production-level code that supports a large user base, ensuring robust design structures and rigorous testing practices. You are passionate about improving resource utilization and observability in complex systems, and you thrive in environments where you can influence performance and robustness.
You are experienced in working closely with engineering teams, contributing to the development of core components that facilitate communication between distributed processes. Your background includes integrating observability features that allow for easy monitoring and troubleshooting of system performance. You understand the importance of low-overhead solutions and have a track record of implementing them effectively.
You are comfortable operating near the bottom of the stack, where your contributions can significantly impact the overall efficiency of the engineering team. You have a strong understanding of architectural principles and have worked on proof of concepts and performance tests that guide architectural decisions.
Experience with OpenTelemetry is a plus, as it aligns with your interest in accelerating the investigation of issues and performance bottlenecks. You are excited about the opportunity to help build a better database system and are eager to join a team that values collaboration and innovation.
In this role, you will lead the MongoDB Networking Observability team, focusing on enhancing the core components of a distributed database. You will work on improving MongoDB's networking capabilities and resource utilization efficiency. Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing observability features that provide insights into system performance and communication.
You will collaborate with a team of engineers, some of whom are based in New York City, while others work remotely across North America. Your influence will extend to the performance and robustness of the open-source database, as well as the overall development efficiency of the engineering team. You will engage in architectural discussions and contribute to the direction of the networking stack.
You will also be responsible for conducting performance tests and developing proof of concepts that inform future architectural decisions. Your work will directly impact the user experience by ensuring that the database system is faster, more reliable, and exceptionally observable.
