Overview

Wikimedia is seeking a Senior Data Scientist on a contract basis to support a research initiative focused on traffic patterns and engagement metrics. You'll work with Python, Jupyter, and SQL to analyze data and provide insights. This role is fully remote.

Who you are

You have a strong background in data science with at least 5 years of experience in analyzing complex datasets and deriving actionable insights. Your expertise in Python allows you to manipulate data efficiently, and you are comfortable using Jupyter notebooks for your analyses. You have a solid understanding of SQL, enabling you to query databases effectively and extract relevant information for your projects. You are detail-oriented and possess excellent analytical skills, which help you identify trends and patterns in data. You are also familiar with statistical methods and can apply them to assess the quality of content and contributor activity.

Desirable

Experience with traffic analysis and engagement metrics is a plus, as is familiarity with natural experiments in data science. You are comfortable working in a remote environment and can manage your time effectively to meet project deadlines. You have strong communication skills, allowing you to present your findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What you'll do

In this role, you will support Wikimedia's research initiative by conducting descriptive analyses of human traffic patterns and referrers. You will produce summary tables and cleaned datasets that will be essential for understanding traffic health and visibility trends. Your work will involve time-series analyses to track traffic health indicators and assess the impact of visibility changes on content quality and contributor activity. You will collaborate with internal teams to ensure that your analyses align with privacy guidelines and data feasibility. Additionally, you will assist in the exploration of how different traffic sources relate to on-wiki engagement, providing insights that will inform future improvements to search visibility and content reuse partnerships.
