The Security Platform & AI team is one of Microsoft's fastest growing businesses, with the mission to make the world safer and more productive for all. The team protects Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform, builds security product offerings for customers across clouds, and contributes to the global ecosystem of defenders, researchers and security policy makers. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of security solutions! In this position, you will design and build features for an innovative security store, empowering partners to leverage Security Copilot and expand Microsoft security offerings across M365 and Azure. You will be instrumental in building a store that connects security vendors, customers, and partners, fostering collaboration and accelerating the adoption of cutting-edge protection tools. Your work will involve developing scalable platforms that support seamless integration of third-party solutions, ensuring robust security standards while driving ease of use and accessibility. By building a store that enables rapid innovation, you’ll empower organizations around the globe to discover, deploy, and manage security products tailored to their unique needs.

Responsibilities
  • Design and build components for a new Store within security, working with partner teams and marketplaces to ensure a streamlined customer experience.
  • Design durable services across multiple releases, optimized to meet all the expectations of highly scalable, available, and reliable cloud services.
  • Work closely with Program Managers and other Security Engineering disciplines to deliver core features in the Microsoft security portal, as well as back end functionality that leads to them.
  • Lead code quality across the team and provide thought leadership in bringing innovation to our products and engineering practices.
  • Use AI to accelerate standard coding practices and further solidify our commitment to security and AI.


Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
 
Additional or preferred qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience designing cloud services that are highly scalable and distributed.
  • 10+ years of experience in development principles and patterns.
  • 10+ years of experience applying distributed systems concepts such as concurrency, conflict resolution, and consensus algorithms to build resilient and maintainable back-end architectures.​ 
  • 9+ years of experience building systems with emphasis on reliability, durability, and operational efficiency, including experience with live site operations, incident response, and performance optimization.​ 
  • 7+ years of experience designing, developing, or maintaining secure software systems, with applied knowledge of authentication, data protection, access control, and secure coding practices 
  • 7+ years of experience designing, building, and operating scalable, highly available cloud services or distributed systems on platforms such as Azure, AWS, GCP, or comparable cloud environments, with production ownership and CI/CD pipeline integration.​ 
  • Knowledge of security best practices. 


Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
