Dropbox is hiring a Staff Backend Product Software Engineer to lead a team in developing innovative cloud-based solutions. You'll work with technologies like Java and Python, focusing on backend systems and APIs. This role requires strong technical leadership and experience in consumer-facing products.
You have 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with a proven track record of building scalable production systems. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues, ensuring reliability and performance.
Your expertise spans multiple areas, including databases, concurrency, and modern machine learning frameworks. You have a strong understanding of how to create high-quality consumer-facing experiences and can translate ambiguous problem spaces into clear technical roadmaps.
You are a hands-on engineer who enjoys coding and conducting critical reviews, while also mentoring and raising the technical bar for your team. You thrive in collaborative environments and can communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
You have experience working on developer-facing API-based products and understand the nuances of consumer product onboarding flows. Your leadership style is inclusive, and you are committed to fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Experience with cloud-based solutions and a strong mix of skills across frontend, mobile, and search technologies would be advantageous. Familiarity with modern ML and LLM-based APIs is a plus, as is a background in consumer-facing product development.
In this role, you will lead a team of 15-20 engineers, guiding them through the delivery of complex projects that align with Dropbox's mission of simplifying collaboration. You will own large problem spaces and influence the Core Engineering roadmap, establishing technical direction and ensuring high standards for engineering excellence.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape area-level decisions and integrate evolving business contexts into product and platform direction. Your hands-on approach will involve daily coding, design authorship, and architectural leadership, ensuring that the systems you build are reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
Mentoring is a key aspect of your role, as you will coach senior talent and help them grow in their careers. You will extend your impact through org-level technical leadership, optimizing for the company as a whole rather than just your immediate team.
You will also be responsible for setting and modeling high standards for operational excellence, driving execution rigor, and ensuring that the foundational systems you work on are built to last. Your contributions will directly impact Dropbox's ability to empower individuals and businesses to work together seamlessly.
Dropbox offers a competitive compensation package, with a salary range of CAD 204,900 to CAD 277,200. You will have the opportunity to work remotely from Canada, allowing for flexibility in your work environment. The company fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration, where your ideas and contributions will be valued.
You will be part of a team that is dedicated to building a more enlightened way of working, where everyone can unleash their creative potential without constraints. At Dropbox, you will have the chance to make a significant impact on the way people share, access, and collaborate on their files, shaping the future of work.
We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement. Your unique perspective and skills could be the perfect fit for our team.
