Overview

Motional is seeking a Senior Motion Planning Engineer to lead the development of algorithms for autonomous vehicles. You'll work on cutting-edge research and software development, focusing on safe and intuitive motion planning. This role requires expertise in robotics and advanced algorithm design.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field, and possess a strong foundation in robotics and software development. Your experience includes leading research and development efforts, particularly in motion planning for autonomous vehicles. You are skilled in developing advanced algorithms and have a deep understanding of probabilistic approaches to decision making under uncertainty. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy mentoring junior team members, fostering a culture of technical excellence and product-focused engineering.

You have a proven track record of architecting and integrating complex algorithms, ensuring their evaluation and refinement for real-world deployment. Your expertise in building robust, scalable, and high-performance codebases allows for rapid exploration and prototyping of innovative motion planning approaches. You are passionate about teaching others best software practices and principles, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

Desirable

Experience with advanced search-based methods and sophisticated geometry-based methods in motion planning is a plus. Familiarity with trajectory optimization, tracking, and control components will enhance your ability to interface seamlessly with upstream and downstream systems. You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and are eager to tackle the challenges of autonomous driving technology.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead the research and development of novel algorithms for motion planning in autonomous driving. You will be responsible for designing and building robust software that generates safe, comfortable, and intuitive routes and motions for autonomous vehicles. Your work will involve architecting and integrating complex combinations of motion planning and prediction algorithms, driving their evaluation and refinement for real-world deployment.

You will collaborate closely with perception and prediction components upstream, as well as trajectory optimization, tracking, and control components downstream, ensuring end-to-end system performance. Your contributions will directly impact the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving systems, making a significant difference in the industry.

You will also mentor junior team members, guiding them in their professional development and fostering a culture of rigorous research and advanced development. Your leadership will help cultivate a product-focused engineering environment where innovation thrives.
