Overview

SpaceX is hiring a CNC Machinist for the Thermal Protection Systems team to develop heat shields for rockets and spacecraft. You'll work hands-on with ceramic materials and contribute to the mission of enabling human life on Mars.

Who you are

You are a hands-on technician with a passion for space exploration and a strong understanding of ceramic materials. You thrive in environments where you can work directly with your hands, fabricating and processing materials that are critical to the success of space missions. You have a keen eye for detail and are comfortable documenting processes to ensure consistency and quality in your work. You are able to read and interpret engineering drawings, understanding the nuances of symbols and notes that guide your fabrication tasks. Your ability to perform product inspections and rework as necessary ensures that the highest standards are maintained in the production of thermal protection systems.

Desirable

Experience working with ceramic fibers, filaments, and powders is a plus, as is familiarity with basic fabrication techniques such as surface preparation, bonding, and oven curing. A background in manufacturing or a related field will help you excel in this role, as will a commitment to safety and quality in all aspects of your work.

What you'll do

As a CNC Machinist on the Thermal Protection Systems team, you will preprocess and manufacture ceramic materials essential for the fabrication of next-tier products. You will be responsible for fabricating ceramic refractory billets, tiles, thermal gap fillers, and coatings that are vital for the thermal protection of spacecraft. Your role will involve basic fabrication tasks, including surface preparation and bonding, as well as oven curing to ensure the integrity of the materials you produce. You will document each step of the material processing to create a replicable process that can be followed by others in the team. Additionally, you will conduct product inspections and make necessary reworks to maintain quality standards. Your ability to read and interpret engineering drawings will be crucial as you work to bring innovative thermal protection solutions to life.
