The Alexa AI Natural Language Understanding team in Italy is seeking a talented, self-directed Software Development Manager (SDM) to tackle some of the most interesting problems on the leading edge of language solutions and machine learning (ML) with our Alexa Artificial Intelligence (AI) org. The SDM will help us in pioneering new machine learning tools and processes through an iterative research and development cycle. You will build scalable, self-serve applications for use across the Alexa AI organization.

You will have significant influence on our overall strategy as you work with a small team of subject matter experts and engineers to define features, system architecture, best practices. You will work with Engineers and Scientists on the team to execute our technical vision and create world class products.

Key job responsibilities
- Hire and develop the best. You will help grow and develop a team of engineers, growing their careers and empowering them to achieve amazing things.
- Set a vision for your team and create product roadmaps. Help your team identify technical and product requirements and opportunities.
- Use project management and prioritization skills to balance long and short-term goals and deliver on your product roadmap.
- Keep your technical skills current to contribute to architecture and design discussions. Lead your team to evolve and scale our service architecture.
- Drive continual improvements: Set and iteratively improve team processes and mechanisms to make sure the right things get prioritized and work gets done efficiently.

A day in the life
A mix of helping the team architect our systems for massive scale, drive efficiency in our software development processes, career coaching and mentorship, collaborating with sister teams, and interviewing.

About the team
The team is based in Turin (IT), peer teams are in Bangalore (IN) and Boston (US).

Turin (inner metropolitan area population 1.7M) has world-class automotive, automation, aerospace, and banking companies. Housing cost is low while there are recreational opportunities that vary from the opera to the Italian Riviera at one-hour drive, the wine area of Barolo and mountain sport in the Olympic Mountains.- 7+ years of experience working directly with engineering teams
- Experience in partnering with product and program management teams
- 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
- Experience managing a team of Engineers
- Experience building highly-scalable distributed systems
- Experience delivering software projects using Agile / Scrum methodologies
- A strong track record of project delivery for large, cross-functional, projects
- Track record of bringing in and growing engineering talent
- Experience operating large software systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
