Google is seeking a Research Software Engineer specializing in ML Efficiency to contribute to AI research and development. You'll work with Python and various machine learning frameworks to optimize models and processes. This role requires a background in software development and machine learning.
You have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience, along with at least 2 years of experience in software development using one or more programming languages. If you hold an advanced degree, you may qualify with just 1 year of experience. You have a solid understanding of machine learning concepts, including reinforcement learning and ML infrastructure, and have spent at least 1 year working in these areas. Your experience may include working with speech/audio technologies or other specialized ML fields. A PhD in Machine Learning, AI, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Data Science is preferred, along with a publication record in top AI venues. You have a strong foundation in both theoretical and empirical research, and you are adept at solving impactful research problems. Understanding the internals of Transformer architecture is a plus, as is experience in university or industry labs with a focus on AI research.
In this role, you will be embedded within Google Research, where you will set up large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly. You will create experiments and prototype implementations, working on real-world problems that include artificial intelligence, data mining, and natural language processing. Your responsibilities will involve designing new architectures and contributing to model optimization and data processing. You will triage product or system issues, debugging and resolving them by analyzing the sources of issues and their impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions in specialized ML areas, utilizing ML infrastructure to enhance model performance.
