Affirm is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for their Comms Platform team to manage critical services for customer communication. You'll work with Java, Spring, and AWS to ensure high availability and seamless operations. This role requires 5+ years of backend engineering experience.

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues. Your deep expertise in Java and Spring allows you to ship high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You understand the importance of proactive maintenance and swift response times, ensuring that customer communications are always timely and of high quality. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with product management, design, and analytics to articulate technical constraints and make informed decisions. You are detail-oriented and committed to delivering quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems. You believe in supporting your peers and stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.

Desirable

Experience with platform modernization and internationalization efforts is a plus, as these initiatives are vital for the organization's growth and competitiveness in the market. Familiarity with cloud services like AWS will enhance your ability to contribute to high availability and scalability of the services you manage.

What you'll do
