We seek a Principal Mechanical Engineering leader with extensive liquid cooled product development experience, proven ability to influence technical teams, and a track record of delivering complex mechanical products from specification through manufacturing and deployment.

AWS Infrastructure Services is the backbone of the global cloud, designing, planning, delivering, and operating all AWS infrastructure that keeps millions of customers connected to the innovation they depend on. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be a technical leader driving transformational change in how we approach mechanical cooling and controls systems across our global data center footprint.

As a Mechanical Engineering Principal, you will serve as a Subject Matter Expert and technical leader within the Mechanical Products and Services team, architecting solutions that fundamentally reshape data center operations while delivering measurable operational and financial benefits. You will own complex, ambiguous problems spanning multiple engineering disciplines and drive technical decisions that impact AWS's global infrastructure strategy.

You will lead the development of next-generation liquid cooled infrastructure solutions, taking ownership of product roadmaps from concept through at-scale deployment. This includes pioneering liquid-cooled and air-cooled rack technologies that enable AWS to maintain its competitive edge. Your technical expertise will guide cross-functional teams in making critical design decisions, evaluating trade-offs, and managing technical risks across complex mechanical systems.

As a principal engineer, you will influence and mentor engineering teams while collaborating with AWS builders, third-party manufacturers, and global stakeholders. You will establish technical standards, drive best practices, and ensure our mechanical solutions meet the highest standards for safety, security, and cost-effectiveness at unprecedented scale.

This role requires approximately 30% travel to AWS offices, data centers, supplier facilities, and validation sites globally. You will represent AWS's technical vision to external partners and drive alignment across our international operations.




Key job responsibilities
* Drive technical vision and roadmap for mechanical cooling and liquid cooling systems across AWS's global data center portfolio
* Provide technical guidance on liquid cooling solutions
* Lead design and specification development for next-generation liquid cooling infrastructure
* Collaborate with Hardware Engineering teams to ensure mechanical solutions align with server and compute roadmap
* Partner with Design Engineering (DE), Construction, Commissioning, Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO), and Field Engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical solutions
* Influence and mentor engineering teams across multiple disciplines, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing
* Identify opportunities to improve mechanical system efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectivenes
* Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes affecting data center mechanical systems


A day in the life
A Principal, Mechanical Engineer for Liquid Cooling works closely with key partners to innovate, create, manage, and support the complete lifecycle of our portfolio of data center cooling infrastructure solutions. This role will collaborate with internal and external partner teams to ensure products and solutions perform as intended. A Principal Mechanical Engineer role will work closely with mechanical engineers to identify and mitigate design issues.

- Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering. Will also accept equivalent domain specific technical experience in lieu of a degree.
- 12+ years in data center or mission critical design and product development/HVAC design/related product development.
- Understanding of the applications of IMC and ASME Codes and Standards- Professional Engineering License
- Capable of driving a team where the problem, opportunity, and strategy may not be defined.
- Deep understanding of cooling infrastructure in mission critical environments

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $146,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $252,900/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
