Senior Staff Engineer, Server Networking & Observability

Who you are

You have a minimum of 12 years of experience in programming, debugging, and performance tuning distributed and/or highly concurrent C/C++ software systems — your strong systems fundamentals include multi-threaded programming and performance profiling, making you an expert in network programming. You are familiar with database internals or have experience building core components for data processing systems, which gives you a solid understanding of how to optimize performance. Your knowledge of the observability ecosystem and best practices allows you to implement effective monitoring solutions. You possess excellent verbal and written technical communication skills, and you have a strong desire to collaborate with colleagues and mentor engineers. Your time and project management skills are exceptional, enabling you to make realistic assessments of project timelines and deliverables.

Desirable

Experience with OpenTelemetry is a plus, as it aligns with our current initiatives to enhance observability in our systems. A background in building infrastructure for database systems will also be beneficial in this role.

What you'll do

As a Senior Staff Engineer on the Networking & Observability Team, you will be responsible for building infrastructure that supports low-overhead observability and communication between MongoDB Server nodes, clients, and other services. You will operate close to the bottom of the stack, significantly impacting the performance and robustness of the database. Your work will involve developing proofs of concept (POCs) for optimizing our RPC stack’s architecture, ensuring it is as performant as possible. You will integrate OpenTelemetry into our systems to accelerate the diagnosis of performance issues and test failures. You will champion a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration within the team, fostering an environment where all voices are heard and valued. Your role will also involve mentoring junior engineers, guiding them through complex technical challenges, and helping them grow in their careers.
