Overview

Affirm is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their AI Agents engineering team. You'll lead engineering efforts to solve open-ended problems and collaborate with product management and design. This role requires expertise in Java and Python.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building production systems that scale effectively. You’ve taken ownership of services from design through deployment and have navigated the complexities of debugging distributed systems. Your technical expertise includes proficiency in Java and Python, and you understand the nuances of service architecture and testing strategies. You thrive in ambiguous situations, guiding your team through challenges while fostering a culture of quality and ownership. You are a strong collaborator, able to work closely with product management, design, and analytics teams to articulate technical constraints and make informed decisions. You are proactive in identifying issues and advocating for solutions, ensuring that your team’s work aligns with broader business goals.

Desirable

Experience with AI technologies or conversational interfaces would be a plus, as well as familiarity with metrics monitoring and operational support. You are comfortable leading discussions around risks and trade-offs, and you have a knack for mentoring junior engineers, helping them grow in their roles.

What you'll do

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Affirm, you will own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through the ambiguity of open-ended problems. You will collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to support the product development lifecycle, participating in ideation and decision-making processes. Your role will involve creating and monitoring metrics to support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts, ensuring that you are prepared to escalate issues when necessary. You will also be involved in on-call efforts, contributing to the “keep the lights on” mentality that is crucial for operational success. Your leadership will help foster a culture of quality and ownership within your team, setting standards for excellence and accountability.
