JavaSpringREST API

Overview

TripAdvisor is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Viator team, focusing on building and maintaining backend systems for travel experiences. You'll work with Java and Spring to develop scalable solutions. This role requires 5+ years of backend engineering experience.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Java and Spring — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are comfortable working in a remote-first environment and value collaboration with your team, participating in discussions around technical topics and coding practices. You understand the importance of creating accessible and inclusive experiences for all users and are committed to continuous learning and improvement in your craft.

Desirable

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure would be a plus, as well as familiarity with microservices architecture. You might also have knowledge of database optimization techniques and performance tuning, which will help you contribute to the efficiency of our systems. If you have experience in the travel or e-commerce industry, that would be beneficial but not required.

What you'll do

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Viator, you will be responsible for designing and implementing backend services that support our marketplace for travel experiences. You will collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure that our systems are robust and scalable. Your role will involve writing clean, maintainable code and participating in code reviews to uphold our high standards of quality. You will also be involved in troubleshooting and resolving production issues, ensuring that our services remain reliable and performant.

You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of technical challenges, from optimizing existing services to developing new features that enhance the user experience. You will contribute to architectural discussions and help shape the technical direction of the team. Additionally, you will mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and helping them grow in their roles. Your contributions will directly impact the success of our platform and the experiences of travelers around the world.

What we offer

At Viator, we embrace flexibility in where and how work gets done, offering a remote-first working model with periodic in-person gatherings for team connection and planning. You will be part of a diverse and inclusive team that values collaboration and innovation. We provide opportunities for professional development and encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement. Our culture is centered around making memories through travel, and we strive to create an environment where you can thrive both personally and professionally.
