Overview

SpaceX is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Starship Avionics team to design high-reliability avionics systems. You'll work with AutoCAD, MATLAB, and SolidWorks to develop mechanical designs and packaging solutions. This role requires a Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering and possess extensive experience in mechanical design and analysis. Your background includes designing packaging solutions for electro-mechanical assemblies, ensuring they withstand harsh mechanical and thermal environments. You are skilled in thermal, structural, and tolerance analysis, utilizing both hand calculations and finite element analysis to validate your designs. You have a strong understanding of failure analysis related to thermal loads, vibration, and shock, which allows you to create robust designs that meet project goals.

You are proficient in 3D modeling and have experience creating production drawings while maintaining design data. Your ability to interface effectively with machine shops and production teams ensures that your designs are not only innovative but also manufacturable. You take ownership of hardware delivery timelines and are committed to the success of projects from inception through design, assembly, testing, and integration. Your leadership skills shine during design reviews, where you engage with both internal teams and external suppliers to ensure alignment on project objectives.

Desirable

Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques and innovative design approaches is a plus. Familiarity with aerospace standards and practices will enhance your contributions to the team. You are a proactive problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to contribute to the mission of enabling human life on Mars.

What you'll do

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Starship Avionics team, you will be responsible for designing and developing avionics systems that prioritize high reliability while minimizing mass and cost. You will lead the design of packaging solutions for electro-mechanical assemblies, ensuring they can withstand the rigors of launch vehicle operations. Your role will involve conducting thermal, structural, and tolerance analyses to validate your designs, using both hand calculations and finite element analysis.

You will participate in the initial mechanical design phase, creating detailed 3D models and production drawings. Your expertise in failure analysis will be crucial as you assess components for thermal loads, vibration, and shock. You will collaborate closely with machine shops and production teams to ensure that your designs can be produced efficiently and effectively, meeting overall project goals.

You will own the hardware delivery timeline, ensuring that all phases of the project—from inception to integration—are executed successfully. Leading design reviews will be a key part of your responsibilities, where you will engage with both internal stakeholders and external suppliers to ensure that all designs meet the required specifications and standards. Your innovative design and manufacturing approaches will help ensure that structural designs meet both weight and rate targets, contributing to the overall success of the Starship program.

What we offer

At SpaceX, you will be part of a mission-driven team dedicated to advancing human space exploration. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, along with opportunities for professional growth and development. You will work in a collaborative environment where your contributions directly impact the future of space travel. Join us in our quest to make life multi-planetary.
