Job Summary
The Platform Foundation Team owns the core functionality of Toptal’s primary internal application platform and many adjacent services. Many of them are used by both our staff and external users (our clients and members of our talent network). We’re looking for someone who is comfortable working across the front-end and back-end of some of those apps.
By joining the team you’ll have the opportunity to work on multiple applications, targeting diverse business domains, usually with
Node.js and Ruby back-ends and React front-ends. We love TypeScript and Ruby, and heavily use GraphQL for the communication between our front-end SPA apps and their back-ends. At Toptal we push the boundaries on what’s possible every single day and we’d love for you to be a part of it. The bulk of the daily work is a mix of back-end work in
Node.js (and Ruby if you’re up to the challenge) and front-end work in React. If you have solid front-end skills and are comfortable getting your hands “dirty” in the back-end as well, this is the right opportunity for you.

Responsibilities:

· Write elegant, efficient and testable Node, Ruby and React code which is easy to maintain and debug.
· Write, update, integrate your features with React front-end components.
· Implement various APIs to feed the front-end with data.
· Cover code with tests and perform manual testing of features, while reviewing the work of colleagues.
· As a true teammate, continuously improve the team’s processes, brainstorm ideas and communicate statuses and progress.
· Mentor other people, provide feedback and grow as a part of the team.
· Learn new concepts and technologies.
In the first week, expect to:
· Be introduced to Toptal’s practices and processes.
· Start participating in company-wide training sessions.
· Set up your local environment and get familiar with our tech stack.
· Create your first pull request.
In the first month, expect to:
· Familiarize yourself with the team’s business domain.
· Contribute to our product development.
· Develop a deeper understanding of our technology, processes and product pipeline.
In the first three months, expect to:
· Actively supply software planning, development and maintenance.
· Suggest and implement improvements to Toptal’s processes and codebase, while exercising discretion and independent judgment.
In the first six months, expect to:
· Lead technical initiatives in our team.
· Drive improvements to the codebase and processes.
In the first year, expect to:
· Have a detailed understanding of Toptal’s technical stack, collaboration rituals, processes and performance.
· Mentor Toptal’s new team members.
Qualifications and Job Requirements:
· 3+ years of web development experience with Node and React.
· Have a demonstrable understanding of backend and development principles, databases, clean code and best testing practices.
· Consider multiple quality-dimensions like user impact, failure tolerance, code maintenance, implementation time, availability, security breaches and performance.
· Have experience with modern JavaScript, preferably TypeScript and React.
· Knowledge of Ruby (or a similar language like Python) is a strong plus
· Be genuinely interested in technology and love to try new things.
· Outstanding written and communication skills
· Tackle complex problems but also consider multiple solutions, weigh them, and decide on the best course of action.
· Thrive on providing and receiving transparent but always constructive feedback.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly growing company and handle a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a diverse array of contacts.
