SpaceX is hiring a Thermal Protection Technician to assist in the assembly and finishing of composite and metallic structures for the Dragon spacecraft. You'll work with pneumatic tools and composite materials in Hawthorne, CA.
You have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate and at least 1 year of experience in hardware assembly, test, maintenance, material handling, or installation. Alternatively, you may hold a certificate from an accredited trade skills program in A&P, manufacturing, or electronics. You are detail-oriented and capable of working with various tools and materials, ensuring precision in your tasks.
Experience with reaming, honing, and countersinking of uniform close tolerance holes is a plus. Familiarity with the aerospace industry or similar environments will help you thrive in this role.
As a Thermal Protection Technician at SpaceX, you will be responsible for trimming and finishing composite and composite metallic assemblies. You will assemble structures, including fit-up, bonding, and fastener installations. Your role will involve preparing metallic and composite surfaces using pneumatic tools such as orbital sanders and angle grinders. You will laminate assemblies by determining the proper placement of composite materials into molds and prepare parts for vacuum bagging, including the placement of bleeders, thermocouples, probes, and vacuum connections.
You will also be tasked with making basic layouts on parts or assemblies to establish reference points and check dimensions using calipers, micrometers, precision scales, and torque wrenches. Setting up oven cures, loading ovens, and configuring thermocouples data loggers will be part of your responsibilities. You will work closely with other technicians and engineers to ensure that all assembly processes meet SpaceX's high standards for quality and safety.
