Staff Backend Engineer, Growth Engineering

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building scalable production systems. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have a wealth of experience in debugging complex distributed systems issues. Your deep expertise in Java and Spring allows you to ship high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are comfortable working with cloud platforms, particularly AWS, and have experience with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes. Your familiarity with databases, especially PostgreSQL, enables you to optimize data storage and retrieval effectively. You understand REST API design principles and have implemented them in previous projects, ensuring seamless integration with various services.

Desirable

Experience with microservices architecture is a plus, as is familiarity with CI/CD practices and tools. You have a knack for performance tuning and can identify bottlenecks in systems. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy mentoring junior engineers, sharing your knowledge to help them grow. You are data-driven and can leverage analytics to inform your engineering decisions.

What you'll do

In this role, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the core platforms that drive Coupang's growth and marketing efficiency. You will collaborate closely with product managers and other engineers to design and implement features that enhance customer engagement and increase purchase frequency. Your work will directly impact the customer experience, as you will be developing systems that support a seamless shopping journey. You will also be involved in optimizing existing services, ensuring they can handle increased traffic and provide reliable performance. As part of the Growth Engineering team, you will contribute to the development of innovative solutions that push the boundaries of what’s possible in e-commerce. You will participate in code reviews, ensuring high-quality code is maintained across the team, and you will have the opportunity to lead projects that align with the company’s strategic goals.
